Sacre-Coeur Basilica is one of the most important landmarks in Paris, France. This Roman Catholic Basilica, perched at the highest point in the whole of Paris, was created to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is a quintessential icon for this particular Christian religion. Wherever you are in this French capital, it is impossible for you not to get a glimpse of the white-dome atop this basilica which, in turn, can be found at the summit of Montmartre Hill.

Basilique du Sacre-Coeur, which was designed by Paul Abadie, is a must-see destination in the whole of France. Locals and tourists say that you would really not be able to experience the whole of Paris if you do not step inside the dome of this basilica and get a panoramic view of the capital of France. The construction of this building was rife with debate and controversies. In fact, it took several decades for the construction of the entire basilica to finish. Because this landmark was built during a period of civil war and revolution in France, it is not really surprising that the basilica's construction had to be delayed several times. Architect Abadie may be the one who designed the building, but he actually died in 1884, just a few years after the foundation of the basilica was laid. Thus, over 5 more architects have overseen the work of Abadie. And even if the completion of this site was in 1914, the basilica was only dedicated in 1919, right after the First World War.

Sacre-Coeur Basilica is a magnificent sight to behold. The influence of Romano-Byzantine architecture can actually be seen in the features of this important French landmark. What is amazing about the construction of this church is that the entire 7 million Francs spent to finish the project all came from private donations. Probably this is also one of the reasons why creation of the basilica lasted from 1875 to 1914.

Some of the important features of the Sacre-Coeur Basilica include the famous white dome that is open to tourists. Aside from this, people also marvel at the travertine stone, which came from Chateau-Landon in Seine-et-Marne. It was used for the construction of the entire church. Other features of the basilica that can amaze tourists and locals alike include Joan of Arc on a horse statue, a garden for meditation, and a large pipe organ made by Aristide Cavaille-Coll. Many films, such as Amelie, Ronin, and Audrey Hepburn's Sabrina also featured this church.
