Louvre Museum is probably the most popular exhibits archive in the world. This French landmark became more popular after it was used as a central setting for The Da Vinci Code, a movie starring Tom Hanks and was based on the novel by Dan Brown. Musee du Louvre, which used to be called Musee Central des Artes and Musee Napoleon, is also considered one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. However, the Louvre was not originally built as a museum. It was actually the residence of several French kings before the Chateau de Versailles was built. It only became a museum in the 1700s.

Every year, almost 8 million people enter the museum doors to have a glimpse of the famous paintings and artworks housed in the Louvre Museum. Undoubtedly, the most popular painting that can be found within the four walls of the Louvre is Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. In fact, it would not be worth visiting this popular Paris landmark without stopping by and appreciating this extraordinary art piece. Tourists who love decorative arts and paintings should spend at least a day in this museum because it has an impressive art collection. Aside from da Vinci, artwork by other popular artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Delacroix, Vermeer and Rembrandt can also be found in the halls of this museum.

Although the Louvre Museum is most famous for its painting collections, these are not the only points of interest that can be found within the building. Aside from paintings, the museum also has 7 other departments which include Sculptures, Drawings, Decorative Arts, Greek and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Egyptian Antiquities, and Near Eastern Antiquities. In fact, some of the oldest artifacts, which date back to 4,000 BC, can also be found in the Louvre. Some of the famous sculptures displayed in this museum include Venus de Milo, Nike of Samothrace, and The Seated Scribe.

The Louvre Museum is also considered as an architectural marvel. If there is one structure that has been used in many works of fiction, it is the Louvre Pyramid, which serves as the entrance of the museum. Architect I.M. Pie was the one who designed this glass pyramid, which was completed in 1989. Apart from the vast and magnificent collection, you can also enjoy an afternoon in the Le Café Marly restaurant or spend a few minutes at a bookshop inside the Louvre.
