It literally can take days to see just one attraction. But one thing you may not immediately think of when you think of The City of Lights is the catacombs of Paris. This is a must to add onto your list of sightseeing spots.
The catacombs of Paris are an experience everyone who visits the city should take sufficient time to check out. Guaranteed you won’t see anything like it in the world. They are truly a wonder to behold. Cemeteries all over the world have been tourist attractions for hundreds of years but the catacombs of Paris are surely one of the most famous and certainly the most haunting. Most of the churches of Paris had their own grave yards but because of urban sprawl and a large increase in dead bodies to deal with the catacombs became the burial place of choice. The cemeteries of the city had begun to cause problems like disease because of improper burials so the bones of those cemeteries were moved into the catacombs.
This underground network of tunnels has been open to the public since 1867. You can even see some graffiti from the 19th century along the walls of the tunnels in the catacombs. The tunnels have been used for other things besides burying the dead. The catacombs of Paris were instrumental to the French Resistance during World War 2 and the Germans also had underground bunkers established within the tunnels of the catacombs. The history of the catacombs is a rich as the history of the city itself. Victor Hugo was an expert explorer of the catacombs and used his vast knowledge of them in his play Les Miserables.
Over the years the City of Paris has taken great pain to make sure the catacombs of Paris are safe for tourists. Because of all the tunnel systems underneath of Paris great care must be taken when building underground. Paris has done a fantastic job of shoring up tunnels for safety measures and few problems have occurred. The catacombs of Paris are a must see for all visitors.
