When you think of Paris France what is the very first thing that pops into your head? It is of course, the Eiffel Tower. Certainly no one anywhere in the world thinks of anything else when someone first mentions Paris. It is indeed one of the most recognized landmarks on the globe. The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris France itself. Of course the first thing anyone wants to see once they have landed at O’rly is this iron icon set on Champs de Mars and overlooking the Seine River. And, with good reason, it is indeed a sight to see.
The Eiffel Tower is the tallest building in Paris and can be seen from any of the beautiful vistas all over the city. In fact, it was the tallest building in the world until 1930 when the Chrysler Building was built in Manhattan, New York. Named for the man who designed it, engineer Gustave Eiffel the structure was completed in 1889 and has been visited by hundreds of millions of people since it was opened to the public. Over six million visited the famous tourist attraction in 2006 alone which makes the Eiffel Tower the most visited monument that you pay to see anywhere on earth.
The Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel to be the entrance to the World’s Fair and marking the hundredth anniversary of the French revolution. The unveiling of the tower the biggest event in Paris at the time and was an international phenomenon. Not everyone liked the tower. Many newspapers of the time called it an eyesore and an embarrassment. The arts community was especially critical of the Eiffel Tower and sent in hundreds of letters to newspapers and other publications decrying their distaste for the tower. Today, the tower is seen as fine example of structural art and architecture and is celebrated by artists and architects alike all over the world.
No matter what, the Eiffel Tower in Paris France is considered one of the most beautiful and romantic sights the world has to offer and millions of people enjoy visiting the tower every year. Whether you just want a bird’s eye view of the City or want to enjoy a meal high above everyone in the tower’s restaurant, your visit to the Eiffel Tower is sure to remain in your memory forever.
